Florida billionaire John Goodman has adopted his 42-year-old girlfriend, Heather Laruso Hutchins, in what rival lawyers say may be an attempt to shield his assets in a wrongful death lawsuit.

Billionaire John Goodman adopted his girlfriend in an attempt to protect his assets because he was involved in a wrongful death civil suit in 2010.
Heather Hutchins was legally adopted on October 13, 2011 as Goodman’s daughter.
Goodman allegedly ran a stop sign and fatally killed 23-year old Scott Patrick Wilson in February 2010. Goodman’s blood alcohol level was reportedly twice the legal limit. He is facing a wrongful civil suit and also criminal charges relating to the fatal crash.

Privously a judge ruled that a trust established for Goodman’s two minor children could not be considered as part of his financial worth if a jury awarded damages to the Wilsons.
John Goodman founded the International Polo Club Beach in Wellington.
Goodman was twice the legal limit in Florida at the time of the crash. In addition to the civil penalties he faces 30 years in prison if convicted of killing someone in Florida while driving drunk.
